The Hunger Games - the European Premiere

Director Gary Ross unveils his stellar cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks. Additional celebrity attendance to be confirmed at a later date

WEDNESDAY MARCH 14, 2012 AT THE O2

The world will be watching as the first in the series of film adaptations of Suzanne Collins’ ground-breaking novels has its European Premiere on Wednesday 14 March. Cast and filmmakers swap the confines of Panem for the glamour of a London red carpet to announce the dawning of THE HUNGER GAMES, the most anticipated blockbuster of 2012.
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik.

Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 12 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent more than 157 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

The Avengers get a new poster and name

The Avengers sag got a new title and poster. The new title is as unremarkable as the "cut and paste" poster. This is another poster to add to the ever-growing list that is starting to make 2012 the year of the lousy poster. Not only that, we also get an updated synopsis to go with the new title.

See more of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie

With a title that will have some people with pre-written headlines for months, Tim Burton's new film, Frankenweenie, gets two new images as well as a set of behind the scenes ones.

From creative genius Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” The Nightmare Before Christmas”) comes “Frankenweenie,” a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.

A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience.

In Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

Act Of Valour makes it to Number 1 in the US box office!

With the unsurprising news that Act Of Valour has made it to number one in the US Box Office with $24.7 million. It'll be more interesting to see what next week's take will be.

With that out of the way, Momentum has sent over the first UK poster for the film. This time with the correct spelling of valour on it!

Not only do we get the above poster but a "Guide to SEAL slang"
  • ASMO : ASsignment Memorandum Orders. Mostly issued in boot camp to set a recruit back in training due to poor performance.
  • Balls to Four : A four hour watch technically spanning from 0000-0400 though in practice begins at 2345 and ends at 0345. Most commonly seen on a "Dogged Watch" schedule.
  • Big E : Nickname for the USS Enterprise (CV-6), which won 24 battle stars during World War II, also known as the most decorated ship in the U.S. Navy. (Actually, the most decorated ship is the USS Parche (SSN-683), receiving a total of nine Presidential Unit Citations, ten Navy Unit Citations, and thirteen Navy Expeditionary Medal awards during its thirty years of service.)
  • BINGO : Minimum fuel needed to return to base (RTB)
  • Bogey : unknown aircraft which could be friendly, hostile, or neutral
  • Bravo Zulu : Originally "BZ" was a signal meaning "Well Done". It is sometimes co-opted by seniors praising subordinates in one form or another.
  • Canoe Club : The U.S. Navy
  • Canoe U : United States Naval Academy
  • Deep Six : Obsolete term for throwing something overboard; refers to the "deep six", the lowest fathom (six feet) before the ocean floor.
  • Ed's Motel : Navy filmmakers' acronym for Editorials, Motion Picture and Television Department.
  • Emerald Shellback. Crossed the Equator at the Greenwich Meridian.
  • Emergency Blow : When a sub rapidly blows all of the ballast out of its tanks, resulting in a rapid ascent and an impressive display as the sub breaks the surface.
  • Five and Dimes : A watch rotation where the sailor or watch team stand five hours of watch, then have ten hours off (to clean, perform maintenance, train, get qualified, conduct drills, take care of divisional business or their collateral duty, eat, shower, and occasionally sleep).
  • FOD : Foreign Object Damage. Caused by Foreign Object Debris, such as nuts, bolts, or anything that could be sucked into a jet engine, damaging it. At aviation commands, FOD can also describe a worthless individual, i.e. "If Airman Smith isn't in this shop in 5 minutes, write that piece of FOD up."
  • Happy Hour : Not what you think. 1hr of cleaning the ship every day.
  • Iron Bottom Sound : A term used to this day to describe the waters between Guadalcanal, Savo Island, and Florida Island in the Solomon Island chain, because of the large number of ships sunk in that area during World War II. It is considered by the Navy as sacred waters, and, every year during the commeration of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, a ship in the area will put out to sea, and drop a wreath in the area to honor the dead.
  • Jarhead : U. S. Marine.
  • On my six : Naval aviation expression referring to having someone or thing at my back, on my tail, directely behind me, relative to the hours of a clock; 12-dead ahead, 3-starboard or to the right, 6 aft or behind and 9-port or to the left.

  • Rick or Ricky : A "recruit" or Sailor-to-be still in boot camp.
  • Rider : most often associated with the submarine service; an individual aboard a submarine not a member of the crew who is assigned to the sub for a period of time to perform a specific mission; usually intelligence related.
  • Rotor Head : Sailor who flies or maintains rotary-winged aircraft (helicopters).
  • Turkey : slang for the F-14 Tomcat
  • UA : Unauthorized absence; the Navy's term for AWOL

As the men of Bandito Platoon race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and wound thousands of innocent civilians, they must balance their commitments to country, team, and their families back home.

Based on real events, the film combines stunning combat sequences, up-to-the minute battlefield technology and heart-pumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure.

Contraband gets new images

It's been a while since I heard anything about this film. That now has been changed with the below set of images. We have already seen the poster and trailers but now we see the first set of images.

Mark Wahlberg leads the cast of Contraband, a fast-paced thriller about a man trying to stay out of a world he worked so hard to leave behind and the family he’ll do anything to protect. Set in New Orleans, the film explores the cutthroat underground world of international smuggling—full of desperate criminals and corrupt officials, high-stakes and big payoffs—where loyalty rarely exists and death is one wrong turn away.

Chris Farraday (Wahlberg) long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy (Caleb Landry Jones), botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris is forced back into doing what he does best—running contraband—to settle Andy’s debt. Chris is a legendary smuggler and quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend, Sebastian (Ben Foster), to head to Panama and return with millions in counterfeit bills.

Things quickly fall apart and with only hours to reach the cash, Chris must use his rusty skills to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and sons become their target.

The 2012 OSCARs. The winners and losers

Mostly by the numbers for this year's OSCARs. Not too many supprises, if any. However we did see Christopher Plummer win for Best Supporting Actor, thus becoming the oldest ever winner (for a non Honorary Award) at 82 years and 75 days. I was going to say that X film won Y out of Z nominations but I can't be bothered to go through the list. So I give you the "OSCARs by the Numbers" to keep you ammused.

Hey Moe!

Fox has just released the first official image for the upcoming Three Stooges. It doesn't show you much apart from Moe, Curly and Larry. Not only that I also give you the current, US, trailer for your amusement.

The movie takes place when the trio are dumped out as newborns at the door of an orphanage. The comedy follows them to adulthood and is very much in the spirit of the original shorts, in which the blue collar bumblers got the best of the wealthy society matrons that tried to exploit them.

See even more of the Titans

With only a week to go before we see Perseus on the big screen. Warner Bros has just released a new trailer along with a load of new images. So sit back and watch the new trailer.
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year-old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus's godly son, Ares, switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus's remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda, Poseidon's demigod son, Agenor, and fallen god Hephaestus, Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.
