THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN in cinemas July 3, 2012

The film, which is now in production and is being shot entirely in 3D, will be released on July 3, 2012. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the Marvel Entertainment production for Columbia Pictures.

Yesterday saw the release of a ton of images for the film. Now I have been sent over a set of trailers. One bloodier & squirmier than the other. Sometimes the trailer does show the lack of budget. On the other hand this seems to have been used to the advantage of helping move the film along.

In 1987, David is a resident at ‘The Manor’ Drug Rehab Unit. Whilst there he is being kept addicted to heroin by a Clinical Director Chris Hunter whilst he has an affair with David’s wife. Chris eventually poisons David with contaminated heroin leaving him with horrendous facial disfigurement and chronic pain. David soon hangs himself.

25 years later and we follow Chris’s daughter Nicole as she tries to break into TV journalism. Her boyfriend (Adam) suggests they spend a night filming with friends in the now derelict Drug Rehab unit. There have been recent reports of paranormal goings-on and they plan to try and film them. It soon becomes clear however that they are very much not alone...

At fortysomething, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream—good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart.  But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his “perfect” life quickly unravels.  Worse, in today’s single world, Cal, who hasn’t dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth.

Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protégé to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling).  In an effort to help Cal get over his wife and start living his life, Jacob opens Cal’s eyes to the many options before him: flirty women, manly drinks and a sense of style that can’t be found at Supercuts or The Gap.

Cal and Emily aren’t the only ones looking for love in what might be all the wrong places: Cal’s 13-year-old son, Robbie, is crazy about his 17-year-old babysitter, Jessica, who harbors a crush on Cal.  And despite Cal’s makeover and his many new conquests, the one thing that can’t be made over is his heart, which seems to keep leading him back to where he began.

Put on your dancing shoes - Footloose is back

Finally, after many years in "Development Hell", the remake of the 1984 classic, Footloose, is about to make its way onto the silver screen.

Another multi-layered story from Dick concerning Washington’s PreCrime Police Force, Tom Cruise plays a police captain under suspicion of being about to commit murder. The force contains mutated humans – precogs – who came predict crime before it happens, the trouble is someone is manipulating the system to frame Cruise…Famed for its ‘drag and drop graphics’ scene where Cruise moves around data on a large screen – something you can now do on your i-phone for real less than a decade on.

Paycheck - 2003

Near future, brain wiping, confusing multi-layered storyline...is this ringing any bells here? Dick’s short story is brought to the screen by John Woo with Ben Affleck taking the leading role as an engineer who recreates competitor’s technology with improvements only to have his memory wiped at the end of each job. But of course that is only part of the story and what ensues makes for a classy thriller...

A Scanner Darkly - 2006

Following common Dick themes, this movie is set in a dystopian future under police surveillance where America has lost the war on drugs. Director Richard Linklater chose to use a technique called rotoscoping where each frame is painted over giving a combination animation/real life look. The end result split the critics but is now something of a cult hit.

20 years ago, in America, a small Jonathan Demme film was released. This film starred The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins started in this film as well. That film was the horror classic The Silence of the Lambs. Now he is starring in another horror film, The Rite.

Memory of the grid isn't what it was. I just realised that there was a new poster released a little while ago for TRON: Legacy that was, in part, an homage to the original TRON poster.

Mark Wahlberg fighting...

Coming to a cinema near you in 2011 yet another film based on an "Incredible true story". Momentum Pictures have now released a trailer, synopsis and some images for the film. No news yet on when a poster will be released.

THE FIGHTER is the inspirational true story of two boxing legends. Dicky Ecklund (CHRISTIAN BALE) is a former boxing legend whose life has become shattered by drug abuse whilst Micky Ward (MARK WAHLBERG), his half brother, has become the town's fighter and fading hope for a champion. But with Micky losing fight after punishing fight, it takes iron-willed Charlene (AMY ADAMS), to help him split with his family, pursue his own interests and train without his criminal brother.

Black Swan - International trailer

In October Fox released some amazing teaser posters for their upcoming release, Black Swan.  They have now released the International trailer and poster for the film.

BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter’s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth Macintyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, “Swan Lake,” Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Loose Cannons

Peccadillo Pictures, the UKs best known distributor of lesbian and gay films have released a poster, trailer and images from their next theatrical release. I've not laughed so much watching a trailer in quite a while.

Celebrated award-winning director Ferzan Özpetek’s outrageous family comedy lifts the lid on a multi-generational household coming to terms with a rapidly modernising world, and the broadening social acceptance that comes with it.

No other nationality respects their food and family gatherings with the fervour and zest of the Italians, but when it comes to the Cantone family, some things are better left well away from the dinner table and in the closet!

Tommaso is the youngest child in the large, eccentric Cantone family who own a pasta factory in Puglia: his mother Stefania is loving but suffocated by bourgeois conventions; his father Vincenzo has unrealistically high expectations of his children; his aunt Luciana is an eccentric; his sister Elena a frustrated housewife; his brother Antonio works with their father at the pasta factory; and then there is his rebellious grandmother, trapped in the memory of an impossible love.

Tommaso, an aspiring writer, has come home from Rome for an important family dinner at which his father will hand over the management of the pasta factory to him and his brother. Determined to assert his own personal choices, Tommaso plans to announce at the dinner that he is gay. But that evening, just as he begins to say “silence please”, he is upstaged by his brother who, to Tommaso’s surprise, and everyone else’s shock, reveals his own secret! Vincenzo orders Antonio out of the house, kicking him out of the family and the factory. He then collapses from a heart attack and the family is overwrought.

Tommaso reluctantly steps in to run the factory but his heart isn’t in it. He misses his friends and his life in Rome, but how can he come out now and risk damaging his father’s health further? Blood bathing virgin killer anyone?

Castles, Eastern Europe, a countess murdering virgins and bathing in their blood. Is Hammer back in business or have they released some of their back catalogue to cinema? The answer is, unfortunately, no to both. However, Metrodome's new release does read like something that the once great distributor would have released.

The tale of the notorious Countess Elizabeth Bathory, who has been recounted by historians, writers, poets, playwrights, musicians, painters, and moviemakers for many years. Tradition has it that Countess Bathory was the greatest murderess in the history of humankind – a fact documented by her entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

Stories have it that she bathing in blood and perfomed many gruesome acts of torture on her female virgin victims before killing them.

But is that really true? In four centuries, no historical document has been found to reveal what had exactly happened.

Diametically opposing the established legend, BATHORY is about a defenceless widow who owns more property and riches than the King himself and who, as a result, becomes a victim of scheming from on high.

More Dick please?

  Now that I've got your attention with the title of this post...  Coming to cinemas in March is a new film based on, yet another, short story by the great Philip K. Dick. Universal has released a new poster for the film as well as the trailer.

  I would exprect the usual mix of action, science fiction and paranoia that we have come to expect in film versions of his films.

Do we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us? Matt Damon stars in the thriller The Adjustment Bureau as a man who glimpses the future Fate has planned for him and realizes he wants something else. To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across, under and through the streets of modern-day New York.

On the brink of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate, ambitious politician David Norris (Damon) meets beautiful contemporary ballet dancer Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt)—a woman like none he’s ever known. But just as he realizes he’s falling for her, mysterious men conspire to keep the two apart.

David learns he is up against the agents of Fate itself—the men of The Adjustment Bureau—who will do everything in their considerable power to prevent David and Elise from being together. In the face of overwhelming odds, he must either let her go and accept a predetermined path…or risk everything to defy Fate and be with her.

Disney needs a haircut?

Disney has just released more images and the first trailer for their 50th, and first for 2011, full length animated feature, Tangled.

  With the person who the Mouse House sacked because he wanted to bring in this new idea of using computers not people to do animation in control - Disney may have another "hit" on their hands..Probably not in the same league as another part of their organisation, Pixar, but it should still turn a profit.
