Meet The Smurfs

With about 100 different Smurfs running around Smurf village, give or take a Smurf, it can be a difficult task to keep everybody happy.  You have to have patience, brains, maturity…and perhaps a beard.
Papa Smurf
As the wise leader of the Smurfs, Papa Smurf truly embodies these qualities and knows how to handle his Smurfs. Papa can often be found with his spell book in his mushroom, concocting potions to protect his Smurfs from the evil wizard, Gargamel.  When Papa’s magic foretells of impending disaster, he faces his biggest challenge yet: going toe-to-toe with Gargamel and leading the Smurfs safely through New York City!

SMURFETTE
There’s something special about SMURFETTE.  Whether it’s her beauty, sweet voice, charming personality, or just the fact that she is the ONLY girl among 100 boys, she just makes the other Smurfs go absolutely gaga. Originally created by Gargamel to trap the other Smurfs, Papa’s magic saved her and transformed her into a real Smurf.  With a smart, savvy attitude, she’ll prove what a pint-sized punch she has when she comes face to face with her creator.

CLUMSY
If it wasn’t for bad luck, CLUMSY wouldn’t have any luck at all – wherever he goes, calamity is sure to follow. With two left feet and an oversized hat and ears, Clumsy’s good intentions pave the road for trouble – and this time the road he chooses leads the Smurfs into a strange new place, New York City.  But everyone has a hero inside of him, and when his other Smurfs need him, Clumsy will prove that you can be more than a name.

BRAINY
If every village has its idiot, every village also has a BRAINY.  Overeager and a bit over-educated, he’s a “know-it-all” who really doesn’t know it all.  Brainy is Papa’s self-appointed right-hand Smurf, and even if he’s annoying at times with his encyclopedia-like knowledge, he might just be the Smurf you want to cast a spell when Papa’s not around.

GUTSY
Easily distinguished by his kilt, roguish sideburns, rugged good looks and Scottish accent, GUTSY has the bravado to take any risk.  A guy who Smurfs first and asks questions later, he’s quick to jump headlong into adventure for his fellow Smurfs.

GROUCHY
Before you think that every Smurf is all about happiness, sunshine, and rainbows, you need to meet GROUCHY.  He smurfs up on the wrong side of the bed……every day.  He hates sunshine, rainbows make him sick, and happiness makes him unhappy. However, somewhere underneath all the scowling and grouching is a heart of gold….although, he probably hates gold too.

KNOW YOUR ENEMY: GARGAMEL
If ugly had a name, it would be Gargamel.  And if obsession had a face, it would look like Gargamel.  This evil wizard is consumed by all things Smurfs: they’re all he thinks about, all he talks about, and all he’s ever wanted. A zero when it comes to magic and a negative 100 in the hygiene department, Gargamel is nevertheless always scheming up convoluted ways to capture the fabled Smurfs and drain them of their “essence” – the key ingredient in creating the most powerful spells!  Gargamel will do anything to capture a Smurf, including chase them into New York City, all in order to become the most powerful wizard in the world!

Smurftastic World Record

Congratulations to all of the 4,891 people from around the world who became Smurfs for the day on Saturday, June 25 to help smash the world record for the "Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues" on Global Smurf Day.

Now we have images from the day as well as a short feature about how the day went and setting the record.

LONDON, June 27, 2011 – On Saturday 25th June, in honour of Global Smurfs Day, Smurfs fans in 11 cities around the world set a new Guinness World Records title for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues, it was announced by Marc Weinstock, president, Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment.  The worldwide events were organised by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Pictures Animation in anticipation of the release of The Smurfs®, which will be released in the UK on 10 August 2011.

As worldwide audiences turned out to celebrate the birthday of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs, fans came to events dressed as Smurfs (white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes, and body painted blue).  Adjudicators from Guinness World Records confirmed that a total of 4,891 people dressed as Smurfs in 11 locations simultaneously around the world, claiming a new title for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues. The previous record had been 2,510 people dressed as Smurfs.

The global record was set by people dressed as Smurfs in Brussels, Belgium; Athens, Greece; Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland; Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Warsaw, Poland; Moscow, Russia; Johannesburg, South Africa; New York, USA; and London, UK.

Commenting on the announcement, Weinstock said, “It’s a thrill to see so many people turn out to be a part of this true fan moment in Smurfs history. Breaking a Guinness World Record on Global Smurfs Day is a testament to the enormous appeal and popularity of these beloved characters.”

Aleksandr Vypirailenko, Guinness World Records Adjudicator, added, “We are impressed by the level of coordination and timing required to pull off this truly global record attempt.  With 11 cities, each with hundreds of people dressed as Smurfs – and it all happened simultaneously.  We apply the same strict rules and exacting approach to every record that we recognise, and it’s exciting to see that this record was not simply broken, but smashed.”

In addition, people around the world observed Global Smurfs Day, from lit monuments in Brazil to a fun-filled family event at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.  In France, Smurf figurines inhabited Paris’s garden of the Champs de Mars (in front of the Eiffel Tower).
The Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, The Smurfs. When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the Smurfs out of their village, through a magical portal, and into our world, they land in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Directed by Raja Gosnell. The producer is Jordan Kerner. The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Jay Scherick & David Ronn from a story by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss, based on the Characters and Works of Peyo.

Make the world turn blue with Global Smurf Day

The UK event is at London's O2 Arean's Live Quarter on Saturday June 25, 2011 from 1:30PM. For further information or to register your interest in taking part, please visit http://www.facebook.com/SmurfMovieUK

On Saturday, June 25, 2011, in celebration of the birthday of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs (born June 25, 1928), Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation will coordinate events all over the world as part of Global Smurfs Day, a worldwide event in anticipation of the release of the Smurfs’ trip to movie theaters, it was announced today by Marc Weinstock, president, Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures. Columbia Pictures’ and Sony Pictures Animation’s The Smurfs will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 10th August 2011.

Commenting on the announcement, Weinstock said, “There are few characters as iconic as The Smurfs – for more than 50 years, they have been icons of popular culture, appealing across generations. Peyo’s creation endures, and that’s why Global Smurfs Day is a fitting way to celebrate his birthday.

On Global Smurfs Day, as participants enjoy fun Smurf-related activities in cities worldwide, they will be invited and encouraged to come to the events in Smurf costume in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Records™ title for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour period in Multiple Venues. The events will be synchronized around the world – this will see the most Smurfs that have ever been gathered at the same time. To achieve recognition from Guinness World Records™ the global events must collectively add up to more than 2,510 Smurfs. Adjudicators from Guinness World Records™ will be on hand in 12 cities around the world as it is expected that hundreds of participants in each city will come to the event dressed as Smurfs (white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes, and body painted blue). While all are being asked to arrive at the event in head-to-toe Smurf costume, each event will have Smurfs hats and blue T-shirts available.

Among the cities participating in the record attempt as part of Global Smurfs Day are Brussels, Belgium (Peyo’s home country); Athens, Greece; Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland; Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Warsaw, Poland; Moscow, Russia; Johannesburg, South Africa; New York, USA; and London, UK. Events include a Smurfs Experience in London as The O2 is turned into The “O-Blue" and a family event at New York’s “Smurf Street Blueport” (a/k/a South Street Seaport); also, Peyo’s family will be on hand to join in the fun in their home country of Belgium.

In addition, there will be Global Smurf Day events in many other locations around the world. For example, in Spain, the village of Júzcar, in the province of Malaga – one of the famous White Towns of Andalusia, renowned for their characteristic whitewashed walls – will kick off the celebrations by painting the entire town blue for the occasion. In addition, “life-size” (that is, 7½-inch tall) Smurf figurines will inhabit Paris’s Trocadero Terrace (in front of the Eiffel Tower), the main square in Reykjavik, Iceland, Bogotá, Colombia’s El Dorado International Airport, and high-traffic areas in Geneva and Zurich, Switzerland. In Taiwan, the landmark Red House will be transformed into a “Blue House,” populated by Smurf figurines. In Copenhagen, Denmark, the event will be at the Tivoli Gardens amusement park, where participants can enjoy face painting, dance-alongs, and more fun-filled events. And in Los Angeles, at Santa Monica Place, there will be a celebration of Peyo’s birthday with Smurfy activities.
