DISHONORED IS AWARDED BEST GAME AND THE ROOM WINS BRITISH GAME

London, 5 March 2013: Journey, the visual and emotive game that evokes in the player a sense of smallness and wonder to forge an emotional connection between themself and the anonymous players they meet on the way, collected the Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Game Design, Online Multiplayer and Original Music Awards at the British Academy Games Awards, hosted by Dara O’ Briain and supported by official partner GAME.

Danny Wallace was awarded with his first BAFTA winning the Performer category for his work as the narrator in Thomas was Alone, the indie puzzle game.

The Walking Dead, the episodic point-and-click adventure role-playing game, picked up the Mobile and Handheld and Story BAFTAs. The Unfinished Swan, a game which explores the unknown, collected the Awards for Game Innovation and Debut Game.

Dishonored, the stealth action adventure game saw off stiff competition to collect the Award for Best Game.

The Award for British Game was presented to The Room, the puzzle adventure game from British developers Fireproof Games, which the jury described as “An engaging, enigmatic, beautiful, slow burn tactile puzzle game…….”

Far Cry 3, the open world first-person shooter collected the Award for Action. XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the turn-based tactical role-playing game, took home the Award for Strategy.

British Developers Travellers Tales collected the Family Award for LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. In the Online-Browser category, SongPop, the online multiplayer music quiz, took away the BAFTA. New Star Soccer collected the Award for Sports/Fitness.

Showcasing the best in young games development and design talent, Starcrossed took this year's BAFTA Ones to Watch Award in association with Dare to be Digital.

Valve’s Gabe Newell was presented with the Academy Fellowship for his outstanding and exceptional creative contribution to the Games industry.

An Awards highlight’s show will be televised on Challenge (Sky: Ch 125, Freeview: Ch 46, Virgin: Ch 139) on Monday 11 March at 10pm.

Tune into the 2013 British Academy Games Awards: The Winners on Monday 11 March at 10pm on Challenge where a host of celebrities and industry professionals celebrate a landmark year in the British gaming industry.

The British Academy Games Awards will take place on Tuesday 5 March at the London Hilton, Park Lane, and will be hosted for the fifth consecutive year by comedian and gamer, Dara O Briain. The ceremony will be streamed live on Twitch, supported by Alienware performance PC gaming laptop and desktop computers and supported by our Official Partner GAME.

The nominations for this year’s Awards span 53 different games, showcasing some of the most popular and ground-breaking games of the last 12 months.

For the first time ever, the Awards will also include the new category of ‘British Game’, honouring the phenomenal level of home-grown creativity from UK development teams.

Challenge is on Sky channel 125, Freeview channel 46 and Virgin Media channel 139.

London, 12 February 2013: The nominations for the British Academy Games Awards 2013 were announced today. This year a total of 53 games have been recognised across 17 categories, showcasing some of the most popular and groundbreaking games of the last 12 months and highlighting the phenomenal level of creativity from UK and international development teams.

Journey and The Walking Dead are both nominated for Best Game, Game Design, Story and Original Music. Journey also receivesnominations for Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Game Innovation and Online-Multiplayer. The Walking Dead is also up for Mobile & Handheld as well as two nominations for Performer. Far Cry 3 and Dear Esther are both up for Artistic Achievement and Audio Achievement. Far Cry 3 is also nominated for Action, Story, Best Game and Game Design and Dear Esther for British Game, Debut Game and Performer.

Halo 4 is nominated for Action, Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement and Online-Multiplayer. Borderlands 2 receives nominations for Action, Artistic Achievement, Game Design and Online-Multiplayer. Assassin's Creed III is up for Audio Achievement, Online-Multiplayer, Original Music and Performer. The Room is nominated for Artistic Achievement, British Game, Debut Game and Mobile & Handheld.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Mass Effect 3, Dishonored, Forza Horizon, The Unfinished Swan and Thomas Was Alone all receive three nominations. Fifa 13, LEGO: The Lord of the Rings, Need for Speed Most Wanted, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, New Star Soccer and Diablo III all have two nominations.

Dear Esther, Forza Horizon, LEGO: The Lord of the Rings, Need for Speed Most Wanted, The Room and Super Hexagon are all nominated in this year's new category, Best British Game.

About the judging process:
Games were entered by both developers and publishers into all the categories listed in this release and were initially voted on by BAFTA’s video games members and a carefully selected list of industry experts via a secure website.

The titles receiving the most votes went through to specialist juries who judge the games prior to making their nominations.

Each juror signs confidentiality papers and casts his or her votes on paper. Theresults in each category are not known until the envelope is opened on the night.

EDITH BOWMAN RETURNS TO HOST BBC THREE RED CARPET SHOW FOR THE EE BRITISH ACADEMYFILM AWARDS

London, 21 January: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is delighted to announce that Edith Bowman willhost the BBC Three coverage of the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 10 February. This is Edith’s third year hosting the show.

Edith said: “I'm so excited to be hosting the pre-show for BBC Three at this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards once again. It’s the most important date in the British film calendar and to be part of it is thrilling; chatting to the great and good of the film world, celebrating what another fantastic year it has been for the men and women both in front of and behind the camera.”

Edith will be chatting to the nominees as well as other A-list celebrities as they arrive on Britain’s most prestigious red carpet. The programme will also feature highlights from the awards over the years, including the funniest acceptance speeches, red carpet successes and disasters, along with all the unexpected moments that happen on live television.

The show will be broadcast on Sunday 10 February on BBC Three before the ceremony, which will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD andhosted by Stephen Fry. The ceremony is also broadcast in all major territories around the world. BRIAN COSGROVE TO BE HONOURED AT THE 2012 BRITISH ACADEMY CHILDREN’S AWARDS

London, 19th November 2012: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is delighted to announce that Brian Cosgrove will be honoured with the Special Award for outstanding creative contribution to the industry at this year’s British Academy Children’s Awards.

The Special Award will be presented by celebrated actor and life-long friend, Sir David Jason at the Awards Ceremony on Sunday 25 November at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Brian and David have worked together on several animated films and children’s programmes including The Wind In The Willows, The BFG, Count Duckula and DangerMouse.

Harvey Elliott, Chairman of BAFTA’s Children’s Committee says, “It gives the Academy great pleasure to honour the work of one of the country’s most respected and influential animators, and for the role that Cosgrove Hall has played in developing, nurturing and inspiring the next generation of animation talent.”

Fellow BAFTA Committee Member and Chairman of Animation UK, Oli Hyatt comments “Brian Cosgrove is a legend to all animators and a founding father of the industry as we know it in this country today. You can track most of the talent that is working around the UK to Brian, through his studio Cosgrove Hall. His employees received both a sound grounding in the practical artistry of creating animation, but also the infectious passion and enthusiasm that rubbed off on everyone that met him. When the industry rallied last year, Brian launched himself into the spotlight to add a voice with real gravitas to the argument. I'm delighted that Brian has won this prestigious award, and can't think of a more deserving and inspirational recipient.”

Brian formed Manchester based animation studio, Cosgrove Hall with his business partner Mark Hall in 1975. The studio quickly established itself as the leading producer of animated programmes in the UK and created shows and films that have entertained millions of people all over the world including DangerMouse, Bill and Ben, Noddy, Rainbow, Chorlton and the Wheelies and The BFG.

Actress Debra Gillett explains “I had the pleasure of working with Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall a number of times and it was always a joy. The quality of the creative work, the high standard on which they based every detail of every project was so reassuring for one of the newer people like me. No matter how long the day, work was always fun, and felt like a family getting together every time we met to record the next set of episodes. Cossie, as he was affectionately known by some, knew what he wanted down to the last minute detail and the result was wonderful, original shows which were enjoyed all over the world. I am so pleased that his work is being recognised with this well deserved award.”

Brian Cosgrove and the team at Cosgrove Hall were also champions of Manchester’s arts and cultural scene, so much so that members of Joy Division (Bernard Sumner), The Stone Roses (John Squire) and Inspiral Carpets (Craig Gill) all worked under Cosgrove and Hall’s tutelage at some point in the studios’ life.

Illustrator and animator Curtis Jobling, who has collaborated with many Cosgrove Hall alumni on programmes such as Bob the Builder, Raa Raa the Noisy Lion, Wereworld and Frankenstein's Cat, says, “It's apparent to anyone the influence Brian has had on my work. If it hadn't been for my childhood spent watching Wind in the Willows and DangerMouse, I may never have gone on to pursue a career in animation.”

Speaking of his Award, Brian said: "After 40 years of making children’s programmes, it is an honour and a privilege to be receiving this Special Award from BAFTA. On hearing I would receive the Award I was thrilled! I've been lucky in many ways, particularly that I've spent my whole career doing what I would have chosen to do as a hobby and I was fortunate in finding the right person, Mark Hall, to work alongside. Together, we built a company that gave work to a whole generation of artists and film makers, and hopefully, via the programmes we made, brought pleasure to many generations of viewers."

London, 23 October 2012: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has today announced the nominations for the 2012 British Academy Children's Awards, which take place on Sunday 25 November at the London Hilton, Park Lane.

Children’s BAFTA winner and Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood will return to host the Awards that celebrate the very best in children’s media, including television, film, video games and online.

Double world record holder Helen Skelton can now add a second Children’s BAFTA nomination to her list of achievements for presenting Helen’s Polar Challenge For Sport Relief. The programme saw her become the first person in the world to reach the South Pole by bicycle. Skelton is nominated in the Presenter category alongside last year’s winner Steve Backshall, Milkshake’s Kemi Majeks and previous winner Justin Fletcher, who also has two nominated programmes in the Pre-School Live Action category.

The Performer category features stiff competition between upcoming and established talent, with 14 year old rapper and actor Khalil Madovi up against 59 year old Young One Nigel Planer.

Three nominations go to the hugely successful series Horrible Histories, which has received nominations in the same categories for the last three years (Comedy, Writer and Performer), and winning for Comedy last year.

The four films nominated in the Feature Film category this year include BAFTA Fellow Martin Scorsese’s Hugo and Disney’s The Muppets. The Hunger Games and Arthur Christmas, the two other films competing for the Award, also appear in the BAFTA Kids’ Vote shortlist.

The final series of Tracy Beaker Returns, featuring Strictly Come Dancing star Dani Harmer, receives two nominations, for Drama and Writer, and a BAFTA Kids’ Vote shortlisting in the Television category. The popular Tracy Beaker series has now received nine nominations at the Children’s Awards over the years. The Amazing World of Gumball also receives two nominations, for Writer and Animation – the same two categories in which it won last year, and is shortlisted for the Kids’ Vote in the Television category too.

Junior Bake Off follows the success of The Great British Bake Off, the BAFTA-winning television programme at this year’s Television Awards, by being nominated in the Entertainment category.

The BAFTA Kids’ Vote opens for voting today: 7-14 year olds will have their say across a whole range of entertainment media in a nationwide poll to choose their favourite film, television programme, website and video game. The shortlist in each category is incredibly strong this year, with films including The Hunger Games, Marvel Avengers Assemble, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 all going head-to-head in the Feature Film category. Nominations for Television show include The Sarah Jane Adventures, Tracy Beaker Returns, Phineas and Ferb, House of Anubis and Almost Naked Animals.

The BAFTA Kids’ Vote opens today (23 October) at 09.00 and closes on Friday 23 November 2012 at 18.00. Children can cast their votes at www.baftakidsvote.org.

For a third year, the winners of the annual BAFTA Young Game Designers competition will be announced at the Awards ceremony. The competition is open to 11-16 year olds and aims to inspire the game designers and game-makers of the future. For the first time this year there were two categories: the Game Concept Award for young people who submitted an idea for a new game; and the Game-making Award, presented by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, for young people who made their own game using computer software. The top three entrants in both categories will attend the ceremony, and the winners will have their game developed further with experts from the University of Abertay Dundee, as well as visiting SCE London Studio, makers of the BAFTA Award-winning EyeToy® and SingStar® franchises. BAFTA has partnered with Abertay University and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) on the initiative.

The British Academy Children’s Awards

London, 27 November 2011: The British Academy Children’s Awards took place earlier today, celebrating the very best in children’s film, television, games and online media of the past year and the talent behind their successes. A top line-up of presenters including Jack Whitehall, Martin Kemp, Warwick Davis, Heidi Range (Sugababes) Tanya Byron, Sam Branson, Ronni Ancona, Sam Claflin, Richard Fleeshman, Laura Hamilton, Anthony Horowitz, Sebastien Izambard (Il Divo), Dakota Blue Richards and Ted Robbins joined host Barney Harwood at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

The final Harry Potter instalment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, took the Feature Film Award and the BAFTA Kids’ Vote in the ‘Film’ category. This comes as a fitting climax to a year in which the franchise received the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award at the Orange British Academy Film Awards earlier in 2011.

There were three other double-winners on the night: Peppa Pig won for the second time in the Pre-School Animation category, its first win since 2005 (it has been nominated for the past four years) and also won the Performer Award for nine year-old Harley Bird, who voices Peppa; Deadly 60 won Awards for Factual programme and Presenter, for adventurer Steve Backshall; and Cartoon Network’s new hit show, The Amazing World of Gumball, took the Animation and Writer Awards.

Newsround, the world’s first regular news bulletin for children that celebrates its 40th anniversary next year, was honoured with the Special Award. BBC political editor, Nick Robinson presented the Award to the programme’s very first presenter, John Craven, creator Edward Barnes and current presenter Ore Oduba.

The BAFTA Kids’ Vote competition powered by Yahoo attracted over 400,000 votes from 7 to 14 year-olds in the UK. There were winners in four categories: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (Film); Good Luck Charlie (Television); Just Dance 2 (Video Games); Bin Weevils (Website). www.baftakidsvote.org remains a year-round destination for the under 14s, with quizzes, games, interviews, and reports from the Awards.

The BAFTA Young Game Designers Award in association with Electronic Arts was presented to a team of 15 year-olds called Nose Dive Studios, from London. Tyger Drew-Honey presented the Award to the team, who will also receive a prize package including a valuable work experience stint at EA’s Criterion Games studio and a prototype of their winning game developed with Abertay University. This was the culmination of a BAFTA initiative that, now in its second year, encourages young people to consider a career in video games.

TOM HARDY WINS THE ORANGE WEDNESDAYS RISING STAR AWARD

After Sunday's BAFTA awards, BAFTA has now released a red carpet featurette about the Orange Rising Star Award. This along with the press release about the award is below.

Orange is proud to announce that the public have voted in their tens of thousands to crown Tom Hardy as 2011’s Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award winner.

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award is the only publicly voted award presented at the Orange British Academy Film Awards. Tom was one of five international actors and actresses nominated for their exceptional talent and recognised as a star in the making. The other nominees were: Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone.

Making his name in Spielberg's TV series Band of Brothers, Tom went onto star in Ridley Scott’s war thriller Black Hawk Down, and has recently proved himself as one of cinema’s most versatile and gripping actors, including an acclaimed performance in the smash hit Inception, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

One of Tom’s most powerful performances has been in the title role in Bronson, in which he put on three stone of muscle to play the infamous British prisoner. He is currently in filming for This Means War with Reese Witherspoon and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with Colin Firth and Gary Oldman, Tom has also secured a part in Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated Batman Rises.

Tom Hardy said of his win: "Thank you very much. This is very kind of you and much appreciated. I genuinely am grateful just to be working at all. I'd like to thank everyone who voted, everyone who loves a good story and every artist in the house tonight for the work they do."

Spencer McHugh, Director of Brand at Orange, said: “We are delighted that Tom Hardy has been chosen as this year’s Orange Wednesdays Rising Star. The support for our award, in its sixth year, particularly from Orange Wednesdays customers, has been phenomenal. Tom is one of Britain’s most promising young actors and clearly has a glittering future ahead of him.”

Finola Dwyer, Chairman of BAFTA and Chairman of the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star jury, said: “The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award celebrates the next generation of acting talent. My congratulations go out to Tom who has won the hearts of the British public in what was a very strong field.”

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen's most memorable characters.

Unlike any other award at the Orange British Academy Film Awards, the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award was voted for by the British public via text message or on the Orange website, www.orange.co.uk/bafta.

Rachel Stevens pays homage to Natalie Portman as she is announced as the hostess for Orange Wednesdays red carpet coverage from the BAFTAs

Rachel Stevens, who has recently given birth to her first child, was today pictured recreating Natalie Portman’s iconic look from the critically acclaimed film, Black Swan as it is announced that she will be hosting the Orange Wednesdays red carpet coverage from the 2011 Orange BAFTAs.

Rachel will be anchoring the Orange Wednesdays red carpet coverage at the ceremony, conducting interviews and analysis with the leading lights of the movie industry; from the huge array of home-grown talent as well as many famous faces flying in from around the globe. The glittering awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 13 February at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.

Rachel commented “It was a real honour to pay homage to Natalie’s fantastic look as the Black Swan. Unfortunately the tutu and make-up isn’t quite right for the red carpet so I’ll be swapping the ballet pumps for heels and a glamorous dress on the night!

I can't wait to present the Orange Wednesdays red carpet show at this years BAFTAs and chatting with some the world’s leading movie stars will be a fantastic experience. I’m thrilled Orange has asked me to get involved.”

FREE BAFTA-NOMINATED FILM SCREENINGS FOR ORANGE CUSTOMERS AT APOLLO CINEMAS AND CINEWORLD

To celebrate the lead up to the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2011, Orange is offering all customers who go to see the Orange Wednesdays ‘Film of the Week’ Hereafter on Wednesday 2 February, two free tickets to an exclusive week of screenings at Apollo and Cineworld cinemas throughout the UK starting Monday 7 February.

Apollo cinemas will be focusing on the best of homegrown talent, showing films nominated in the ‘Outstanding British Film’ category including 127 Hours, Another Year, Four Lions, The King’s Speech, Made in Dagenham. Cineworld will be showcasing films starring nominees for the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star award such as Gemma Arterton (Tamara Drewe), Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Tom Hardy (Inception), Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Emma Stone (Easy A).

As well as free tickets, Orange customers will be able to take advantage of PizzaExpress’ 2 for 1 offer on pizza and dough balls throughout the entire week, specially extended from just Wednesdays.

Orange customers who go to see Orange Wednesdays ‘Film of the Week’ will be sent a text with an SMS code allowing them to access an online box office. Here they can book a pair of free tickets to a whole host of special screenings of BAFTA-nominated films, as well as those starring Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award nominees Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone.

The free screenings will take place nationwide between Sunday 6 February and Friday 11 February, at selected Apollo and Cineworld cinemas across the UK.

Four Lions gets the twitter thumbs up

It was, probably, the most controversial film of last year but Chris Morris' black comedy, Four Lions, has got the Twitter seal of approval for its two BAFTA nominations.

I don't think it has a change of winning, just down to what films its up against. I will stick my neck out and say it will lose to 127 Hours in the "Outstanding British Feature" category and to Monsters in the "Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer" category. I may be proved wrong come February 13. Here's hoping.

Chris Morris' "Four Lions" is a funny, thrilling comedy that illuminates modern jihadism through the prism of farce. It understands jihadists as human beings. And it understands human beings as innately ridiculous. What "This Is Spinal Tap" did for heavy metal and "Dr Strangelove" the Cold War, "Four Lions" does for the modern face of terrorism.

In a British city, four men have a secret plan. Omar (Riz Ahmed) is disillusioned about the treatment of muslims around the world and is determined to become a soldier. This is the most exciting idea Waj (Kayvan Novak) has ever heard. Better still it’s a no brainer because Omar does his thinking for him. Opposed to Omar and everyone else on earth is the white islamic convert Barry (Nigel Lindsay). He’d realize he joined the cell to channel his nihilism - If he had half the self knowledge of a duck. Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) is the odd man out. He can make a bomb – but he can’t blow himself up just now coz his sick dad has "started eating newspaper". Instead he’s training crows to fly bombs through windows. This is what Omar has to deal with. They must strike a decisive blow on their own turf but can any of them strike a match without punching himself in the face?

"Four Lions" plunges us beyond seeing these young men as unfathomably alien. It undermines the folly of just wishing them away or, even worse, alienating the entire culture from which they emerge. The film is neither pro nor anti religious. The jokes fly out of the characters’ conflicts, excesses and mistakes. Crackling with wit and tension, "Four Lions" is the essential response to our failure to engage with reality and a high toast to the idea that laughter is better than killing.

The 2011 BAFTA Nominations are

Over at BAFTA headquarters the nominations for the 2011 BAFTAs have just been announced.

There isn't that many surprises in the list. However, there are some that I'm happy to see on the list.

The King’s Speech receives 14 nominations. Black Swan is nominated in 12 categories,Inception has nine nominations and 127 Hours and True Grit are each nominated eight times. The Social Network has six nominations.

Alice in Wonderland has five nominations; The Kids Are All Right and Made in Dagenham have four nominations apiece; and The Fighter, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Toy Story 3 each receive three nominations.
